Five Ingredients in Pawganic Pet Food That May Surprise You

One of the main tenets of Pawganics Pet Food is transparency: that means our customers, you, being aware of what you're buying, where it comes from and what its purpose is. Part of this transparency is including a complete list of ingredients. You can check what's in your pet's food under the description of their product listing on our website. If you have a look, you'll see: no mystery meats, synthetic shortcuts, or ingredients that read like a science experiment. When viewing this list though, you might find a couple ingredients that surprise you. Let's take a deep dive on five of them and see why they are in our Pawganics Pet meals.

One. Kangaroo.
This one isn't just a surprise for some, it's a bit controversial! There are a few concerns with eating kangaroo meat, including the ethics of eating an Australian icon, and the risk of disease for wild-caught meat. After considering these concerns, we decided to include them in our raw and enhanced pet meals. Kangaroo is extremely lean, naturally high in iron, rich in bioavailable protein, lower in saturated fat than most traditional red meats, and suitable for sensitive bellies or allergies. This nutrient powerhouse is great for our less complete meals to ensure your pet is getting everything they need. We make sure that the wild kangaroo we use was ethically and thoughtfully hunted and healthy enough to be on human shelves.

Two. Garlic.
What?! Garlic?! Oh, yes. In large doses, yes — garlic can cause gastrointestinal irritation in cats and dogs. But in small, properly calculated amounts, garlic lives up to its underrated identity as a superfood. It has been used traditionally for generations as a functional food to support immune function; help maintain gut health, provide natural antimicrobial properties and defend against fleas. The key is how much and what it is mixed with — which is why we enlisted the help of pet nutritionist Ruth Hatten to formulate the best Evolutionary meals possible.

Three. Green Lipped Mussel Powder.
This ingredient isn't the same as the first two, because it sounds like something that should be in healthy pet food, but do you know what exactly it means? Green Lipped Mussels could be considered one of nature’s most powerful anti-inflammatory whole foods. These funky guys are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids, and Glycosaminoglycans which contribute to the regulation of cell growth, proliferation, promotion of cell adhesion, anticoagulation, and wound repair. It assists with recovering from injury and keeping joints well-oiled and healthy. While it's not an ingredient you see on the shelves, it is an important part of our pet meals.

Four. Coconut.
Look around hard enough and you'll see someone on the internet saying "coconut is bad for you! It's too fatty and you'll get heart disease!". So if its bad for humans, surely its bad for your precious kitty or pup, too? Well, the fats in low-processed natural coconut are medium-chain triglycerides which are metabolised differently from other fats, burning up quickly as energy and sending great boosts to the brain. It also helps support coat, skin and more.

Five. Lamb.
Lamb feels like one of those ingredients that gets added to fancy kibbles to pretend at being 'natural' and 'healthy' and justify the $$$, however we chose to include it in our meals because: it's a high quality, tolerable complete protein, high in zinc, b vitamins and healthy fats. It provides a different taste and nutrient profile from more common red meats and adds a palatable taste to keep pet's interested.
