The first few years of your new puppy's life defines one thing: if they're food motivated or not. A food motivated puppy will show their fangs, as it were, in an instant. Other dogs, less food motivated, may require other modes of love and motivation. But regardless of if they sink their teeth in treats or not, all puppies need food.
Puppies have very different dietary needs to adult or senior dogs. Their bodies are working hard to grow strong bones, build muscle, develop a healthy immune system, and fuel their constant energy. Here are five simple tips to help you feed your puppy the right way from the start.
One. Prioritise Protein-Rich, Whole Foods
Protein is the foundation of growth. Puppies need more protein than adult dogs to support rapid development of muscles, organs, and tissues. Offer fresh, high-quality sources like beef, chicken, lamb, turkey, and fish. A raw or minimally processed diet like Pawganics ensures your pup gets biologically appropriate food that's easy to digest and naturally rich in amino acids.
Two. Add Bone Broth and Soft Edible Bones
Growing pups need plenty of calcium, phosphorus and other minerals to support healthy bone development. Bone broth is gentle on their digestive systems and provides minerals, collagen and gelatin to support joints and gut health. Soft, raw edible bones like chicken necks or wings (appropriately sized for your pup) can also help with dental health and provide natural calcium.
Three. Don't forget the fruit and veg.
While puppies are primarily carnivores, small amounts of vegetables offer a helpful dose of fibre, antioxidants, and enzymes. Leafy greens, pumpkin, carrots and zucchini are all great additions. Fruit and veg are in all of our pet food meals but for growing pups, you can also include some Pawganics plus+ supplements daily.
Four. Include Omega-3s for Brain and Eye Development
Puppies benefit hugely from essential fatty acids like DHA and EPA—especially in their first few months. These support brain development, vision, and a shiny coat. Small amounts of oily fish like sardines or a high-quality fish oil supplement, or choosing a meal with a higher amount of seafood, can give your pup a healthy boost.
Five. Feed Little and Often, with Routine and Care
Puppies thrive on consistency. Feed them smaller meals multiple times a day (3–4 for very young pups, tapering down as they grow) and keep a regular schedule to help with digestion and training. Monitor their weight, energy and stool to adjust portions and ingredients as needed. Before you change their diet, discuss with a vet and allow a slow transition from their previous food to raw food.
Puppyhood is just the beginning, but the food you choose now can set your dog up for a lifetime of vibrant health. Choose fresh, species-appropriate foods, pay attention to their unique needs, and enjoy every bouncy, curious moment. Pawganics meals are tailored to nourish dogs at every life stage—starting with the most important one and right until their last day.
