Welcoming a new pet into your home is exciting, you're probably ready to jump straight to the best part: cuddles, walks and sharing unconditional love, however there are a few things to consider first!
One. Proof Your Home
Your home is your dog's or cat's new kingdom, so make sure it's safe for them to explore. Secure any potential hazards like cords, cleaning supplies, and medication. Also check any plants you have in the house and check if they're toxic. Remove anything breakable or valuable that could be chewed on. Think like a cat or dog on ground level and look for anything they might find interesting (and potentially dangerous).
Two. Stock up on essentials.
Before your new furbaby arrives, stock up on essentials like food and water bowls, a leash and collar, a comfortable bed, and toys. Consider a crate for training and safety, and don't forget about grooming tools like a brush and nail clippers. Research different brands and products to find the best fit for your pet's needs.
Three. Give them a dedicated space.
When a new pet comes into your home, they're in a new place for the first time. As you continue your normal routine, they'll be adapting to a whole new life. It is important to set out a safe and comfortable space for your pet to relax and feel secure. This could be a bed, a crate, or even a corner of a room. Make sure the space is quiet and free from distractions. This is a place they will call their own, like a human does with their bedroom.
Four. Introduce your new pet gradually.
We know it's exciting when you welcome a new pet into your home and you may be keen to show them off to friends, family and neighbours, or to smother them in love and affection. However, it is important that when your new pet arrives you don't overwhelm them with too much excitement. Give them time to explore their new environment and settle in. Let them sniff around and get comfortable before introducing them to other pets or people.
Five. Establish a Routine.
Mostly dogs, but cat's too, thrive on routine and predictability, so try to establish a consistent schedule for walking, playtime, and bedtime. This will help your pet feel safe and secure in their new home as it will be easier for them to adjust and expect what will happen. This includes what you feed them and when you feed them!
Welcoming a new pet, cat or dog, into your home is so exciting but it is an adjustment for you and your new pet, too. Assisting them with the transition by pet proofing your home so they're safe, stocking up on their essentials so they're comfortable, carve out a space for them that's their own, give them time and space to adjust and establish an important routine with your pet's exercise, sleep and feeding! This way the adjustment will be as painless as possible and set the stage for the long, happy life you'll live together.
